âAre you sure theyâll believe us?â Isabell pulled herself up in the buggy next to Kathleen. âI had to tell Caroline and Emma that you wanted to talk to me about Colin in private.â
âWell, I do, sort of.â They turned onto Oak Street and Kathleen gathered her thoughts. Isabell hadnât replied, but she could see the frown crinkling her forehead.
âDaniel put you up to this, didnât he?â
âNo, actually . . . I donât want to see you hurt either.â Isabell opened her mouth to say something, but Kathleen cut her off. âLet me finish before you say anything, please. Heâs never had anyone to teach him what it means to be a man. My father was . . . Well, you know what he was. Jeremy wasnât much of a role model either, though heâs come a long way since falling in love with Molly.â
âMaybe thatâs all that Colin needs as well.â
âHeâs never really loved anyone but himself. I know heâs trying to change. Just be careful. Thatâs all Iâm saying. I do think he can be the man youâd like him to be, but Iâm not sure Daniel will ever believe that. Heâs seen him at his worst.â
Isabell sighed. âIâm a fairly wealthy young woman, moderately attractive, and while Iâm not bragging, I have had a number of young men asking to court me. Not all of them are sincere in their sentiments. Iâve learned to separate the wheat from the chaff, as it were. Your brother is not the chaff, though his field does need some tending. Daniel could help him if he put his mind to it. I donât know if you realize what an amazing catch my brother is.â
A warmth ran up Kathleenâs neck, flooding her cheeks. âYou know everything that happened just a little over two months ago. I canât make that kind of commitment yet. Besides, what would people say if I let someone start courting me so soon after my fatherâs death?â
âWhat else are you to do? A woman left alone?â
âIâm hardly alone. I have a brother and a stepbrother who are more than willing to see to my needs.â
Isabell shrugged. âPerhaps, but somehow I donât think youâre the kind of woman to let the antiquated remnants from the last century keep you from doing exactly as you please. Not that I object, mind you.â
âNo, Iâm not, and when Iâm ready, Daniel will certainly be first on my list. Besides, he has a few secrets of his own heâs not ready to share yet. It doesnât seem fair. He knows all my secrets.â
Isabell laughed, the same sort of sincere, heartfelt laugh her brother had. âOh no! Thatâs Dannyâs tale to tell, not mine. Mother has warned us of the dire consequences that would result from such a breach of confidence.â
Kathleen couldnât help but be a bit jealous of the love their family had for one another, even if they did argue from time to time. They turned off the road, down a back alley.
