“Are you sure they’ll believe us?” Isabell pulled herself up in the buggy next to Kathleen. “I had to tell Caroline and Emma that you wanted to talk to me about Colin in private.”

“Well, I do, sort of.” They turned onto Oak Street and Kathleen gathered her thoughts. Isabell hadn’t replied, but she could see the frown crinkling her forehead.

“Daniel put you up to this, didn’t he?”

“No, actually . . . I don’t want to see you hurt either.” Isabell opened her mouth to say something, but Kathleen cut her off. “Let me finish before you say anything, please. He’s never had anyone to teach him what it means to be a man. My father was . . . Well, you know what he was. Jeremy wasn’t much of a role model either, though he’s come a long way since falling in love with Molly.”

“Maybe that’s all that Colin needs as well.”

“He’s never really loved anyone but himself. I know he’s trying to change. Just be careful. That’s all I’m saying. I do think he can be the man you’d like him to be, but I’m not sure Daniel will ever believe that. He’s seen him at his worst.”

Isabell sighed. “I’m a fairly wealthy young woman, moderately attractive, and while I’m not bragging, I have had a number of young men asking to court me. Not all of them are sincere in their sentiments. I’ve learned to separate the wheat from the chaff, as it were. Your brother is not the chaff, though his field does need some tending. Daniel could help him if he put his mind to it. I don’t know if you realize what an amazing catch my brother is.”

A warmth ran up Kathleen’s neck, flooding her cheeks. “You know everything that happened just a little over two months ago. I can’t make that kind of commitment yet. Besides, what would people say if I let someone start courting me so soon after my father’s death?”

“What else are you to do? A woman left alone?”

“I’m hardly alone. I have a brother and a stepbrother who are more than willing to see to my needs.”

Isabell shrugged. “Perhaps, but somehow I don’t think you’re the kind of woman to let the antiquated remnants from the last century keep you from doing exactly as you please. Not that I object, mind you.”

“No, I’m not, and when I’m ready, Daniel will certainly be first on my list. Besides, he has a few secrets of his own he’s not ready to share yet. It doesn’t seem fair. He knows all my secrets.”

Isabell laughed, the same sort of sincere, heartfelt laugh her brother had. “Oh no! That’s Danny’s tale to tell, not mine. Mother has warned us of the dire consequences that would result from such a breach of confidence.”

Kathleen couldn’t help but be a bit jealous of the love their family had for one another, even if they did argue from time to time. They turned off the road, down a back alley.
